Salvation (Gedatsu)
|
|
Out of jealous desire for a man, Princess Hitomaru conceals herself within a bell. She becomes possessed by the ghost of Akushichibyoe Kagekiyo and appears with her face concealed in silk gauze. After expressing Kagekiyoís hate and confusion, the spirit is exorcised and Kagekiyo briefly appears in his true form before vanishing. The play was revived in 1914 by Ichikawa Sadanji II, and again in 1932 by Ichikawa Sansho in a script by Yamazaki Shiko.
