The God Fudo (Fudo)
A religious piece that consists of the appearance on-stage of the powerful deity Fudo Myoo Sonzo. During the Edo period, The God Fudo was included as a deux ex machina climax to many plays. The version that is played today is adapted from the climax of Saint Narukami, the God Fudo and the Kitayama Cherry Trees (Narukami Fudo Kitayama Zakura).
It was revived by Onoe Shoroku II in 1967, with a script by Tobe Ginsaku. More recently, Danjuro II and Shinnosuke (currently Ebizo XI) both appeared as Fudo in a revival of Naritasan Funjin Fudo in 1992. This last version is not counted as one of the Kabuki Eighteen.
